A B O U T R E I K I
Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese name consisting of two words, Rei, and Ki meaning universal life energy.
It is a hands-on healing art that transfers Ki (energy) through an attuned practitioner to a person requiring to regain or maintain the harmony of body, mind and spirit.
A Reiki practitioner is attuned to the Ki energy by a Reiki Master, a process involving training in the history and proper use of Reiki, along with a traditional ceremony conducted by the Reiki Master to pass on the Ki energy to their student.
While the art of hands-on healing has ancient roots, the tradition of Reiki, as we know it today, is attributed to Dr Mikao Usui, a religious instructor/Buddhist monk, born in Japan in 1865. It is told that in 1922, Mikao Usui journeyed to the top of Mt Kurama to fast and meditate, where on the 21st day he was struck by a bright light and he became enlightened to this healing art.
For the four years prior to his death in 1926, Mikao Usui travelled the world using and teaching Reiki. Today Reiki is widely recognised for its holistic benefits and continues to gain popularity as a non-invasive, complementary healing technique.
